This course is
designed for students who have completed Japanese 1000, 1010, 2000, 2010, 3000,
and 3010 at WMU or the equivalent. Students who have not taken these courses
should request permission from the instructor to take the course.
コースの目的Course
Objectives:
教科書 Course Materials:
All class materials will be provided by an instructor. In
the former half of the semester, we will use selected chapters of 「中級の日本語」 An Integrated Approach to Intermediate Japanese (by Miura, Akira and Naomi Hanaoka McGloin,
The Japan Times, 1994) and other textbooks for advanced learners. In the latter
half of the semester, we will use various types of materials, including short
fiction, essays, and newspaper articles. The professor will make these texts
available to students.
参考書
Recommended Texts:
An English-Japanese
and Japanese-English Dictionary. (Dictionaries with furigana are especially
recommended. Many dictionaries that are available, especially in
Kanji dictionary, for example Kodansha's
Essential Kanji Dictionary: A Compact Character Dictionary for Students and
Professionals (NY:
Kodansha International, 2002) [ISBN 4770028911].
きまりRules:
Classroom
activities will be conducted only in Japanese. Students should
ask questions to the teacher and each other in Japanese.
評価 Grading:
The final letter grade will be determined according to the following
scale.
期末プロジェクト(発表と論文) Final Project (Presentation and Paper):
Students will give a
15 minute presentation and write a final paper (4-5 pages long) on a topic of
your choice in the last week of the course; however, you must consult me about
your topic beforehand. Use your own words as much as possible, but feel free to
use a dictionary in working on your project.
出席とクラス参加Attendance & Class Participation:
Class attendance is important for your
successful progress. Please let me know ahead of time if there are
circumstances, personal or otherwise, that might affect your performance in
this course. I really do not expect any absences from class, but if you must be
absent for good reason, please leave a phone or e-mail message before class time. (I always credit
effort on your part to use Japanese in any situation, including e-mails and
telephone calls!)
More than three absences
will detract from your final grade. After 3
absences, regardless of the reason, your letter grade will be lowered by 1% each day you are absent.
As students of Japanese,
you are part of an interdependent network; when one of students misses class,
the group dynamics change; therefore, you owe it to your classmates, to your
instructor, and most of all to yourself, to attend class regularly and promptly.
宿題の確認Homework:
At the beginning of every class, homework
will be checked. Please try to come
early to class to make sure the teacher has time to check your work. If you come late, it is the students’
responsibility to show their homework to the instructor before they leave the
class, or they will not get credit for that homework. Late homework may be checked by
the instructor upon the students’ request, but NO late homework will be counted
for credit.

You are responsible for making yourself
aware of and understanding the policies and procedures in the Undergraduate

integrity. These policies include cheating, fabrication, falsification and
forgery, multiple submission, plagiarism, complicity, and computer misuse. If
there is reason to believe you have been involved in academic dishonesty, you
will be referred to the Office of Student Conduct. You will be given the opportunity
to review the charge(s). If you believe you are not responsible, you will have the
opportunity for a hearing. You should consult with me if you are uncertain
about an issue of academic honesty prior to the submission of an assignment or
