As my research
page attests, I am an economic geographer focusing on regional development
in Middle America
(particularly in Yucatán, Mexico where I have been working for
several years). I am proud to be a Latin Americanist
geographer. In addition, I am proud to carry on a tradition of teaching
and research in Latin America that began at
Western Michigan Geography with Lucia Harrison almost a century ago
(1909 to 1947) and continued with Oscar
Horst throughout most of the second half of the 20th century (1956
to 1987). Although Oscar has been retired
for many years (and will be moving to Florida soon), he remains a very
active and productive Latin Americanist
geographer.
Given my obvious predilections and biases, I believe that the focus
on Latin America has been among the strongest
and most durable features of WMU geography (in all fairness, geographic
education and tourism also display similar
characteristics). Consequently, I have created links below to pages
summarizing the contributions of Lucia Harrison
and Oscar Horst to Latin Americanist geography (and Western Michigan
University). Anyone seeking information
about me is referred to my homepage
or my research
page. Any comments or corrections to these pages are
appreciated.
