Okay, this is the obligatory webpage devoted to "full disclosure" of all sorts of personal details.
I am a native of Philadelphia and was
raised in the neighboring township of Bristol, PA. As the
preceding pages attest, I am an Asst Professor in the Department of Geography at
Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan. I have an MA (1998) and PhD
(2001) in
economic geography from Michigan State University and an undergraduate
degree (1995) in
urban and environmental studies
from Ohio University. My research interests
are somewhat
eclectic, but fit broadly under the umbrella of the geographic implications
of economic policy
decisions. My primary interests are spatial interaction and spatial
autocorrelation. For example,
I have researched the impact of NAFTA on trade between
different regions of Mexico and
the United States; the viability of export-oriented industrialization
as a regional economic
development strategy in Yucatán,
Mexico; and the interaction of neo-liberal economic
reforms, agriculture and socio-economic characteristics at the regional-level
in Mexico.
I am initiating three new research projects. One study examines the impacts
of tourism in
Quintana Roo, Mexico (Cancún) on the economy of the
neighboring state of Yucatán.
The next project focuses on changes in access to credit and banking services
in Mexico as a
result of increasing integration and globalization in financial services.
Also, I am beginning to
work (I think) with researchers and government officials in Yucatán
on a study of the role of social
capital as a means of promoting economic development in rural areas
of the state. If you are
interested in these topics, I've placed some sample publications on my research page.
