One of the most important aspects we have found regarding the teaching of grammar is that teachers must have a guiding philosophy of teaching grammar, based on their understanding of their classrooms, students, and current theory and practice in teaching grammar. Taking Constance Weaver's assertion that 'grammar must be taught in the context of real writing' as part of a writing process -- and not separating it as a distinct and separate skill from communication, we developed our own theory and practice-based philosophies of teaching grammar. We recommend that other teachers do the same.

The documents below were written as an introductory project. In it, each class member was given a scenario that asked him/her to articulate a 'philosophy of teaching grammar' to an audience of other teachers in their schools. The results show an overview of different theoretical and pedagogical approaches to grammatical instruction, within the overarcing context of 'best practice.
