NEW: Grammar Podcasts (Spring 2007)

Grammar Podcasts

In this course, we usually do reviews of popular texts that apply to the teaching of grammar and/or writing (see the Eat, Shoots & Leaves reviews). For Spring 2007, we've added a twist by doing it with Podcasting. Each of the following projects are downloadable and appropriate for classroom and/or faculty development use. They include three elements:

  • An audio podcast
  • A Teacher Guide (.pdf)
  • A Student Guide (.pdf)

Title: Grammatical Goof-Ups:  Having Fun with Anguished English, By Dr. Richard Lederer

Description:
This podcast was designed to be used in the classroom, complimented by the student worksheet, as well as the teacher guide.  First, have the students listen to the podcast.  Hopefully this is something that all students will enjoy, and in turn get them excited to learn about grammar and writing.  As the students listen to the podcast, the instructor should review the teachers guide to familiarize themselves with grammatical lessons covered during the podcast.  Topics covered include pronoun problems, modifier trouble, and revision of the written product.  Once the students have listened to the podcast, the instructor should pass out the student worksheet.

Now the students can have a laugh at several pictures taken from Dr. Lederer’s hilarious book, Anguished English.  After the wave of laughter subsides in the classroom, time for the students get to work.  Have the class complete the exercises at the bottom of the student worksheet so they can start to get a feel for some of the grammatical fowl-ups discussed during the podcast.  Once the students have completed, the instructor should go over pronoun problems, modifier trouble, and revision of the written product to make sure that all students are clear on the topics covered.  Remember, this is supposed to be a fun exercise that builds confidence in young writers, so have fun!!!

For more hilarious grammatical goofs, we encourage you to purchase Dr. Lederer’s book, Anguished English.
