Kirsty started her education at Carlow College, a small liberal arts school in Pittsburgh, PA. At the time Carlow was one of 13 schools in the United States which offered a certificate in Perfusion technology, and unlike other schools Carlow packaged their certificate program into a Bachelor's degree in Biology.
The city gave her many opportunities. One of which was to work at Carnegie
Museum alphabetizing millions of grasses (who knew people actually did
this?). Other (more exciting) opportunities were working for several years
in the histology department at the Pittsburgh Coroners Office and volunteering
at a local hospital's genetics lab. Frustration over d,
e
proofs drove her to graduate school at Virginia
Commonwealth University were she eventually realized that her love
of the sciences was centered in mathematics. This caused her to continue
her studies at the University of Maryland.
Personal reasons brought Kirsty to Michigan were she was fortunate enough
to meet up with the Mathematics faculty at Western
Michigan University. The mathematics
department introduced the topic of nonlinear analysis in a summer topics
course, and the analysis
seminar continued to spark interest in this area.
