Individualized Reading Program – Reading Interest Inventory

1. On a scale of 1-10, where 10 is extremely important and 1 is not at all important, how important is reading in the world in general? Why?

2. On a scale of 1-10, where 10 is extremely important and 1 is not at all important, how important is reading to you? Why?

3. What word or phrase do you think describes reading? Why? (ex: takes you away, because it lets you imagine yourself in different places and times)

**For the next section of the Inventory, pretend that the written passages are drawn from a book. Use the following scale to indicate how much you would enjoy reading that book.**

1-Would not at all enjoy reading
2-Would not really enjoy reading
3-Not sure if I would enjoy reading
4-Would enjoy reading
5-Would very much enjoy reading

4. ____ My elbow hurt, but the pain of losing was even worse. As I slammed my racket to my side, I felt all the anger spilling out of me like steam from a kettle. The shame of losing the match was incomprehensible to anyone who had watched me play through the finals. The hardest part of being let down is the recession of that bubbly feeling. You know, that little sensation in your stomach that tells you that something exciting is going to happen.

5. ____ The darkness came thundering down on her, leaving her lost, confused, and utterly alone. The bus rumbled to a stop, as the passengers lurched forward and clutched at their bags. Suddenly, the light flickered on. Time to go. She dizzily stood up, trying to think of where to go, what to do. As she took the heavy steps off the bus, she desolately stumbled to the bench that seemed more inviting than the sidewalk in front of the old diner.

6. ____ The warm sun glanced through the thickening clouds and soaked through his skin, tearing away at the darkening feeling of apprehension that had clawed its way into his heart. He glanced at his watch, speeded his step and propelled himself forward, rushing past the quietly accepting right side of the escalator.

7. ____ The engine rumbled and shook, barely held in check, as the wheels spun out of the driveway, shooting little bits of dirt and gravel in every imaginable direction. God, I can’t be late again. I can’t believe I fell asleep. I whip the wheel to the left and hit the gas.

8. ____He fell to the ground. His heart was racing. He looked around. No one in sight except for the shadows around him. He cried as hard dust bit into his face. Mixed blood and tears streamed in dark rivers down his once ruddy cheeks. This is it, he thought desperately. There’s no more hope of finding it again.

9. ____As I saw the blood ooze under the door, I knew something was wrong. Timmy had been gone too long, and well, blood all over the floor typically isn’t a good sign. So, I resisted my unsavory response to be helpful and did what any decent horror movie girl should do. I let forth a blood-curdling scream and fainted dead away as the puddling blood continued to creep toward me.

10. ____ The most beautiful thing that I have ever seen was the kiss. Glasses rang with the sharp taps of spoons as they smiled and gave each other one of the most beautiful kisses that I have ever seen. They’re not happy all the time. They argue, they disagree constantly, but after all this time, they still love each other. Will I ever find a love like that?
