Friday Lab Syllabus: As seen above, the Friday Lab participation involves 150 of
the total 1000 course points. These points will be earned through quizzes,
homework, group work, and attendance as shown below. For any assessment, you
must show your work in order to receive full credit. If you only state the end result you will not
earn full credit on the problem.

Homework: Homework will be assigned weekly and collected at the
beginning of your Friday lab. There is a link to the list of homework problems
located on the course webpage. Late homework will not be accepted. If you
are unable to attend class drop off your assignment prior to your lab in my
mail box which is located in the main math office (3rd floor of
Everett Tower). If you are absent for any reason you are still responsible for
turning in the assignment on time. Your homework should be neat and
complete. Do things to make me
happy. For example, cut off ragged
edges, put problems in sequential order, show all of your work (this means that
just writing an answer, even if that answer is correct, will not get you
any points), give explanations if explanations are required, skip lines between
problems, make sure your name is on the paper, use pencil, and staple multiple
pages. I reserve the right to take off
points if your work is messy in any way.
If I can’t read it, I won’t grade it.
If you have an idea, but can’t complete the problem for some reason,
write the idea. Give me something. Partial credit is possible.
Quizzes: There
will be tentatively 6 quizzes. Your lowest score will be dropped. If time permits, we may have another
quiz. Your highest five will be
counted. Unfortunately there are no
make-up quizzes. This means that if you
are absent for one of the quizzes, that is the quiz
that will be dropped.
In-class Assessment: Attendance is vital for the success of any course, so to
encourage attendance there will be several in-class assessments. These
assessments may be in the form of quizzes, group work, or individual
assignments. There will be no make-up assessment. Instead for the occasional
illness we will drop a few of the lowest assessments at the end of the
semester.
Incompletes: According to University policy, incompletes are
given only in those rare instances when extenuating circumstances have
prevented a student from completing a small segment of the course. An
incomplete is never given as a substitute for a failing grade. The last day
a student can process an officially withdrawal from a class to avoid a failing
grade is Monday, March 17th.
Student Conduct: Please familiarize yourself with the student
code of conduct and the definition of plagiarism. The use of mobile phone or
two-way radios is strictly prohibited during class, unless it’s a life-and-death
emergency. Silence your phones, beepers, iPods, etc. at the entrance of the
classroom and store them. For a complete copy of the code go to http://www.osc.wmich.edu.
WMU Policies and
Procedures: You are responsible for making yourself aware of and
understanding the policies and procedures in the Undergraduate and Graduate
Catalogs that pertain to Academic Honesty. These policies include cheating,
fabrication, falsification and forgery, multiple submission, plagiarism,
complicity and computer misuse. [The policies can be found at http://www.wmich.edu/catalog under Academic Policies, Student Rights and
Responsibilities.] If there is reason to believe you have been involved in
academic dishonesty, you will be referred to the Office of Student Conduct. You
will be given the opportunity to review the charge(s). If you believe you are
not responsible, you will have the opportunity for a hearing. You should consult
with me if you are uncertain about an issue of academic honesty prior to the
submission of an assignment or test.
Success: Your success in this class is important to me and the rest
of the math 1140 teaching team. Please feel free to utilize the entire team.
The lab instructors can be found in 3363 Rood Hall during their office hours
and Dr Eisenhart is located in 3329 Everett Tower. If
we are busy when you stop by we will gladly arrange a more appropriate time.
The best way to contact me is by email
meaghan.m.heires@wmich.edu, though leaving a message on my
desk in 2263 Rood is also fine.
