Homework for First Year Seminar

For class September 12:

1. As for all of your classes and class meetings, you should bring a planner or calendar to every class meeting. Inside it, you should have a record of every exam, project deadline, or time commitment known to you.

2. As for all your classes, you should have a binder or folder in which you keep the materials for the course. Put a copy of the syllabus for this course in the binder. Bring the binder, blank paper, and a writing implement to every class meeting.

3. Read Norma Field's aims of education address. It is available at this website. Write your own one page (250 words or less) paper about why you are in college -- your own "Aims of Education". As part of this paper, include a reference to Norma Field's address.

For class Sept 19:

1. Bring a copy of Norma Field's Aims of Education address, and be prepared to talk about it. Be sure you can answer the questions: What does she mean by a liberal arts education? What does this definition mean for your education?

2. Look up one to three volunteer activities that interest you that we could do as a class, using Bronco Jobs, the office of Volunteer services, or any other resources you deem appropriate.

For class Sept 26:

1. Read Chapter 3 of "Step by Step to College and Career Success." This book is available at the reserves at Waldo library.

2. Consider two majors. For those of you who don't know your major, choose two major you can imagine having. For those of you who are certain of your major, pick another major that would also be interesting to you if you had two lives to live. Complete steps one to three on page 37 for "thinking about your major" for both majors. Write a one page summary of your thoughts.

For class Oct 3:

1. Read Chapter 5 : Communicating Clearly of "Step by Step to College and Career Success." This book is available at the reserves at Waldo library.

2. Write a one page paper about what has suprised you about being a student at WMU.

For class Oct 10:

1. Read Chapter 2 : "Step by Step to College and Career Success." This book is available at the reserves at Waldo library.

2. Determine which courses you need in order to graduate from Western, and create a plan for when you will take each one. Use this to plan what you should take next semester. Bring these materials to class on Monday.

For class Oct 17:

1. Go the health fair, and get a card. Follow the instructions. Find something you did not know at the health fair.

2. Write a response of at least one paragraph to each of the following questions. What do you do now to maintain a healthy lifestyle? What did the performers say about a healthy lifestyle, and what did they communicate without saying anything? What did you learn at the fair about your health that you did not know? What do you plan to do to remain healthy while at WMU?
