Mission Statement: The Rose/Austin Duo is dedicated to sharing the beauty of the bassoon and horn to audiences throughout the Great Lakes region through performing and educational opportunities. Origination: Wendy Rose and Paul Austin met in 1993 when they became full-time music faculty members at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan. They attended Banff Centre for the Arts, Alberta, Canada, as Resident Artists in 1994 to continue their chamber music collaboration. Rose and Austin performed together as members of the Western Wind Quintet and the Fontana Chamber Arts Ensemble, and have been praised for their “harmonizing that produced lovely sound” (Kalamazoo Gazette). They formed the Rose/Austin Duo in 2001, with their debut performance at the International Horn Society’s annual symposium. Currently Wendy Rose is Associate Professor of Music at Western Michigan University, and Paul Austin is Assistant Principal Horn with the Grand Rapids Symphony. Recently heralded by the Holzminden Zeitung for “an absolutely stunning way to play the horn” Paul Austin frequently appears as soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral player. Recent appearances include a concerto performance with the Chicago-based period instrument group Ars Antigua, and recitals in the USA, Canada, and Europe. Paul Austin became a member of the Grand Rapids Symphony horn section in 1999 and also performs as resident horn player for Fontana Chamber Arts and Saugatuck Music festivals. After earning a doctorate in horn performance from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music in 1994, Dr. Austin was a Resident Artist at the Banff Centre for the Arts in Canada. As a recipient of a Gilmore Emerging Artist grant, Austin studied natural horn in London, England. He is the author of A. Modern Valve Horn Player’s Guide to the Natural Horn, which is recognized world-wide as a leading textbook on natural horn training. For eleven years he has served the International Horn Society as Advertising Agent for their publication The Horn Call. In 2002, Paul Austin was listed in the International Who’s Who in Classical Music.
