Introduction to Archaeology

Flake Cores

Core and flake tool removed from the Core (in this case a Middle Paleolithic Point).

Note that the core is not the tool in these cases. The flakes which are struck become the tools. They may be used just as they are or may be further flaked to the desired shape (retouching).

Blade Cores

Note the multiple, parallel scars on the core's surface, where earlier blades were struck.
