Text: Applied Partial Differential Equations by Richard Haberman
Reference: Differential Equations
and Linear Algebra by C. H. Edwards and D. E. Penney
General: The prerequisite for this
class is Math 3740 Differential Equations and Linear Algebra.
We will cover the following
topics.
1. Matrix exponential (Reference 8.1,8.2).
2. Uniqueness of solutions (Reference A4,A5)
3. Nonlinear systems (Reference 9.1,9.2,9.3)
4. Heat
equation (Chapter 1)
5. Methods
of separation of Variables (Chapter 2)
6. Fourier series (Chapter 3)
7. Wave Equation (Chapter 4)
8. Sturm-Liouville theory (Chapter 5)
Students are responsible for all material in the
text and all material presented in class. This includes any material not in
the text and all material in the text that was not presented in class.
Calculator and Maple: A graphing calculator is required for this class. A TI-89 or TI-92 PLUS is recommended. We will also use the software package Maple to explore differential equations. Here is a link for course related maple work sheet.
Homework and class discussion: Here is a list of problems. Homework will be collected on Mondays for those assigned in the previous week. They must be complete and neat. Class discussions are important part of learning. Students are encouraged to participate and 10% of the class evaluation is related to participations of class discussions.
Hour Exams: Two one hour exams will be give and there is no make up.
Final: The final exam will be 12:00--2:00pm on Friday, August 15.
Grading: The final couts for 30%, the exams 20%, class discussions 10% and the homeworks count for 40%.
This gives a total of 100%. Grading scale is approximately as follows:
A (85-100%) BA(78-84.99%) B (71-77.99%) CB(63-70.99%)
C(56-62.99%) DC(50-55.99%) D(43-49.99%) E(0-42.99%)
