Psy 5950: History of Psychology, 3 credit hours

The historical and philosophical foundations of contemporary psychology are examined in this course. The major emphasis concerns the evolution of psychology as a natural science. Our historical survey begins with a review of the primary philosophical antecedents to psychology, from ancient Greek philosophers to 17th-19th century proponents of Rationalism and Empiricism. We will also examine early studies of physiology and their influence on the establishment of psychology as an experimental science as well as Darwin's influences in shaping modern psychology. The majority of this course is devoted to studying the development and progression of the different schools of thought that have delineated modern psychology over the past 120 years.
