Answer |

Installation of ubuntu 6.06 is taking so long
time and getting a black screen for so long time, what should I do. |
Yes, it will take a while to start the installation. You can make it
little bit faster by one of the following: 1) Copy
the .iso image to your local disk and capture the
local image instead of the remote image at the server. 2) Increase
the allocated memory to 215MB and then start the installation. After the
installation is done change the allocated memory back to 128MB. You can change the memory allocated as follows: 1) open the Virtual PC console 2) Select the ubunto 6.06 virtual machine
(only one click to select) 3) click on settings button from the right side 4) click on memory and change the memory allocated for the selected
virtual machine |

Can I work on the labs assignments on a machine other than the ones available
in the room CEAS C-208 |
The lab assignments must be run entirely in
the secure environment of the Computer Security Lab (CEAS C-208). Running
them in any other environment, including your own desktop or laptop is prohibited since it may cause security threats to you
or others. |
|
What is the gateway that I should use in the lab? |
The default gateway that you should use in the security lab is
192.168.0.1. You may use another gateway as described in your assignment. |
|
What IP address should I use? |
In order to avoid IP address conflicts, you may use an IP address that
follows the following structure: 192.168.0.xx such that if your machine code is D7 you should use one number from the range 170 to 179 (7 is the code of your machine). Please take into consideration that the IP address that you can use may
have to follow other rules specific to the lab that you are working on. |
|
I cannot run Ubuntu and windows 2000 at the
same time. What can I do? |
You should adjust the memory that VPC allocates to Ubuntu.
A working parameters in the lab are: -
About 200 MB for Ubunto, -
Let VPC decides on the memory for windows 2000 (should be 128 MB). |
|
In lab2a/step 4, I cannot ping win2kserv.security.local. |
You should ping the name of your windows 2000 machine that you
specified in the host file at step 3. The name should be “2kServ”. |
|
When I run Lab 16c,
step 2, I get the error message “Unable to relay” when I try to
send an email. |
You should use the same email server that you used in Lab 4. The email
server IP address that you should use for all the labs is 192.168.0.103; It
is located in the security Lab. The email accounts that you will use in all
the labs are the same accounts that are described in
Lab 4. |
|
When I run Lab 16c,
I do not get the expected results in step 3 and 4. |
You may make sure that you are using in the email a URL of a file that
is physically located on your windows 2000 machine. Make sure you file is in the
folder c:\inetpub\wwroot. Also,
make sure you can access the URL that you use in the email through the
browser. |
|
When I run Lab17a, step 7-9, I get the error “Error code 1004”. |
You may get the error if you run syn flooding
from Microsoft XP with SP2. If this is the case, you may run Lab17a step 7-9
from Windows 2000 to Windows XP and not from Windows XP to Windows 2000 as
described in the book— syn [windows 2000 IP]
[windows XP IP] –p 80 |
|
