State Motto
"Wisdom, Justice, and Moderation"
Georgia was the 4th state in the U.S.; it became a state on January 2, 1788. It was named Georgia to honor King George II of England. The capital city of Georgia is Atlanta. It covers an area of 59,441 square miles, making it the 24th largest state in the country. As of 2000, the population of Georgia was 8,186,453 people. It is also the home of the Chattahoochee River, the Savannah River, and the Suwannee River. Some great lakes that are found in Georgia include Lake Sidney Lanier, Clark Hill Lake, West Point Lake, and Lake Hartwell.
