Literature Circles

In groups of three to four students you will explore areas of African literature and culture of interest to you. During the weeks of literature circles you should have read the equivalent of two or three 200 page novels. Works read during literature circles may be useful to your final project.

Groups can can last for one or more weeks. Texts are available at the bookstore, library, and via Amazon.com. Plan ahead so that materials can be acquired in time for all members to fully participate. During literature circles the professor will serve as a resource, visit, groups, and evaluate participation.

As you read post blog entries that both address the reading and issues it raises about life in Africa.

The bookstore has kindly agreed to stock a selection of recommended books for literature circles.

Research ideas for additional literature circle reading using Professor Webb, other scholars on campus, the library (WMU library has excellent shelves of African literature see call number PR9387.9), on-line resources including African literature syllabi, etc.

We are lucky to have a variety of scholars on the WMU campus who can be resources to help you develop reading lists and ideas for the study of African literature. When you contact any of these scholars specify that you are currently a student in my class.
