ED 430: Creativity in the Classroom
Fall, 2003 Creativity Journal
Objective: If we want to be creative teachers, we need to be creative beings. The journal is meant to be a chance to develop and stretch your creativity. It will hold your drawings, writings, and creative musings… Journal entries are based on Kent and Steward’s Learning By Heart: Teachings to Free the Creative Spirit.
Assignment: Select ONE creative activity to complete for each chapter (with the exception of chapter one – write only / no artwork). Be sure to label the chapter and activity you chose to eliminate confusion. Following completion of the activity in your journal, brainstorm and critically reflect on your process and the different ways that this activity, and chapter in general, could translate into a K-8 classroom. Include discussion on the following:
How did you respond to this task and the reading? What are the connections between your Learning By Heart assignments, additional readings and the k-8 Classroom? What are the connections between your own creative expressions and how they might impact your teaching? There is no page requirement – I expect you to think and write in a fashion that demonstrates your commitment to excellence and your own abilities.
Make sure to bring your creativity journal to class anytime a chapter assignment is due. If you complete artwork outside of the journal (e.g. a sculpture), make sure to bring it to class along with the writing in your journal. Part of your participation grade is based on bringing assignments to class the day they are due.
Your journal will be turned into me on Monday, October 13th during classtime. Evaluation and feedback will be based on:
______ (13 points) Full completion of creative activity
______ (9 points) Ability to critically process/reflect on the Learning By Heart reading and the assignment process; the connections between your Learning By Heart assignments, additional readings and the k-8 Classroom; and upon the connection between your own creative expressions and how they might impact your teaching.
______ (3 points) Effort and personal touch (including entries beyond what is asked for in the text – bringing in your own personal creative entries)
______ / 25 points total
