Prerequisites:  AAE 371 ; ME 360.


OBJECTIVES

            The course objectives are to:

1)        introduce concepts of flight stability and control,

2)        study analysis methods of aircraft stability and control and

3)        apply them to the design of control surfaces for various configurations.


DESCRIPTION

            The course deals with the analysis and implementation of aircraft stability and control. First, stability is defined and the affecting aerodynamic forces and moments are discussed. Then static stability is analyzed for longitudinal and lateral disturbances. Finally, dynamic stabilities and motion control are analyzed. Methods of analysis are studied thoroughly. Also, the relations to the design and use of control surfaces are emphasized.

Static Stability and Control:

Longitudinal stability; Longitudinal control; Directional stability; Directional and lateral control; Coupling effects.

Longitudinal Dynamic Stability and Control:

Equations of motion; Stability derivatives; Solutions; Computational methods.

Lateral Dynamic Stability and Control:

Equations of motion; Stability derivatives; Solutions; Computational methods.
