Catalog Description: 3 cr-hr (3-0)

Elements of design optimization. Defining design variables, cost functions, and constraints. Simplex method for linear problems and numerical methods for nonlinear unconstrained and constrained problems.

Prerequisite:      ME 562.

Problem formulation.

Fundamental concepts.

Unconstrained optimization.

Constrained optimization.

Linear programming methods.

Interactive design optimization.

 

GRADING

Homework problems    - 35% (as assigned)

Midterm exam              - 25% (Mon., 6 Mar., 2006)

Final exam                    - 40% (7:15-9:15, Mon., 24 Apr., 2006)
