The Creative Choreographer
Spring 2009
Study # 4: Music Assignment
(Shown & discussed on March 18)
You must show in progress to at least two peers and Jane for feedback no later than March 16. Choreographers who fail to do this will have the choreography portion of their project grade lowered 0.5.
With your partner(s), please select a piece of music from the list below which has also been provided to you on a CD. Analyze the music in written form similar to samples provided in class. The document should have your names, the music title, composer, length and performer if available. Be sure to provide a key to the symbols you use to create a graphic analysis of the music. Together, decide on a structure for the dance and develop some motifs that can be used to unify the dance. Choreograph solos for each other and yourself to the selected music for presentation in class on Wednesday, March 18. Though you may dance together at some point in the piece, the bulk of the dancing should be solo. You will receive a joint written work grade for the written analysis, unless you choose to each submit a music analysis, and a joint grade for the choreography.

Study # 3: Site-Specific Study
(Shown & discussed on February 25)
Directions: Working solo or in groups on February 23, select a site, other than a dance studio, in this building or an adjacent building. If you plan an outdoor site, it must be an easy walk from Dalton Center and you must plan for inclement weather. Suggestions for possible sites include stairwells, the lobby, the locker room, the elevator, etc. Create a study for which the movement is directly influenced by the environment in which the study is performed. You may choose music to accompany your study if you wish, but please be respectful of your environment so you do not disturb other classes or offices. Carefully consider where you want your audience to stand. Email me your site location and cast no later than noon on February 24 so I can organize our “tour.” This assignment will be graded credit/no credit so that you can feel free to take risks and explore, however you should still show understanding of the choreographic tools in the creation of this study.

Study # 2: Inspiration study
(Shown & discussed on February 11 & 16)
Must show in progress to me and two peers for feedback no later than February 9 which will be a work day with all 3 studios available, plus A & B at 6:00.
Select a work of art, a poem or literary passage, or an historic figure which you can use as inspiration to create a dance study. Rather than replicating the item or person, your study should reflect your ideas about the item or person. A target length is 45 seconds to one minute. The study should use the basic tools of choreography used to date to evoke the item or person used for your inspiration.

Study # 1: Powerful Experience Assignment
(Shown & discussed on January 28 & February 2)
Identify a powerful experience that had a significant impact on your life, keeping the specifics of your experience private. Develop a minimum of three movement motifs that are motivated by the experience. Show the three motifs to to the class beginning at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, January 21. We will give you feedback on what we see.
After receiving feedback on your motifs, choreograph a solo dance that uses the 3 motifs you developed related to your feelings and reactions generated by this powerful experience from your life. A target length is 45 seconds to one minute. The dance should be a complete statement with a clear beginning, middle and end. It should make effective use of the choreography tool box elements of time, space and energy/dynamics. It should be an individualized, unified statement. Any dance genre may be used. Consider what attire, hair, and if appropriate, make-up that will aid you in communicating your intent.
