Directions: Take the prescription emailed to you and create a solo that addresses my prescription for you as well as two other aspects needing further exploration from the list created by your peers. The study should use the toolbox as appropriate to the prescription.

Study # 4: Site-Specific Study
(Shown & discussed on March 28)

Directions: Working solo or in groups on March 21, select a site, other than a dance studio, in this building or an adjacent building. If you plan an outdoor site, it must be an easy walk from Dalton Center and you must plan for inclement weather. Suggestions for possible sites include stairwells, the lobby, the locker room, the elevator, etc. Create a study for which the movement is directly influenced by the environment in which the study is performed. You may choose music to accompany your study if you wish, but please be respectful of your environment so you do not disturb other classes or offices. Carefully consider where you want your audience to stand. Email me your site location and cast no later than noon on March 21 so I can organize our “tour.” This assignment will be graded credit/no credit so that you can feel free to take risks and explore, however you should still show understanding of the choreographic tools in the creation of this study.

Study # 3: Music Assignment
(Shown & discussed on March 14 & 16)

You must show in progress to at least two peers and Jane for feedback no later than March 9. Choreographers who fail to do this will have the choreography portion of their project grade lowered 0.5.
With your partners, please select a piece of music from the list below which has also been provided to you on a CD.  Analyze the music in written form similar to samples provided in class. The document should have your names, the music title, composer, length and performer if available.  Be sure to provide a key to the symbols you use to create a graphic analysis of the music. Together, decide on a structure for the dance and develop some motifs that can be used to unify the dance. Choreograph solos for each other and yourself to the selected music for presentation in class on March 14 & 16. The music should be divided relatively equally. Though you may dance together at some points in the piece, the majority of the dancing should be solo.  You will receive a joint written work grade for the written analysis, unless you choose to each submit a music analysis, and a joint grade for the choreography.

Study # 2: Inspiration study
(Shown & discussed on February 21 & 23)

Must show in progress to me and two peers for feedback no later than February 18. Note that both Feb. 14 and 16 are work days and I will only be here to open the studios on Feb. 16.

Select a work of art, a poem or literary passage, or an historic figure which you can use as inspiration to create a dance study. Rather than replicating the item or person, your study should reflect your ideas about the item or person. A target length is 45 seconds to one minute. The study should use the basic tools of choreography to evoke the item or person used for your inspiration.

Writing Assignment # 1:
Due Monday, February 14

Review the videotape of your first choreography study. What do you think is the most memorable moment? Is it what you had intended it to be, or was it something unexpected? What made the moment memorable? What strengths did you see in your work from the space time and energy/dynamics tool boxes? What areas of the tool boxes could use more exploration in this study. What else might you do differently if you continue your work on this material? Please type and double space this assignment. A target length is 1-2 pages.

Study # 1: Powerful Experience Assignment
(Shown & discussed on February 2)

Identify a powerful experience that had a significant impact on your life, keeping the specifics of your experience private. Develop a minimum of three movement motifs that are motivated by the experience. Develop a rough draft using these motifs. Show it to me and at least one other classmate at some point during class on Monday, January 31. We will give you feedback on what we see. The remainder of the time on this day will be for working on the assignment.

Finalize a solo dance that uses the 3 motifs you developed related to your feelings and reactions generated by this powerful experience from your life. A target length is 45 seconds to one minute. The dance should be a complete statement with a clear beginning, middle and end. It should make effective use of the choreography tool box elements of time, space and energy/dynamics. It should be an individualized, unified statement. Any dance genre may be used. After receiving feedback on your rough draft, revise as needed and be prepared to show on February 2. Consider what attire, hair, and if appropriate, make-up that will aid you in communicating your intent. This assignment will be graded.

Duet assignment: Due in class Monday, January 24

Teach your 8 count phrase to your partner. Together, using primarily the movement material in your two 8 count phrases, create a duet that explores at least 3 elements of the choreographic tool box that we discussed in class on 1/19. Each complete 8 count must appear at least once in the duet. Aim for a dance that is approximately 30 seconds long and has a clear beginning, middle and end. You will have the first hour of class on Monday to finalize your duet and we will see them beginning at 5:00. Studios C, D and the MMR are available for work spaces. Questions? Let me know! This first assignment is a credit/no credit assignment.
