The Hip Joint

http://getbodysmart.com/
This is an interactive site that shows where each muscle is, it’s attachments (orgin and insertion) and the best part is it shows the actions on the joint that the flexion of this muscle creates. Once on the site you can look at bones as well.  For the muscle movement of the hip you will get to the main page and click on Muscular System, from there you can click on Muscles that ACT ON THE ANTERIOR THIGH (Femur), POSTERIOR THIGH (Femur) or ACT ON THE LEG (Tibia and Fibula).  Each of these show muscles that cross the hip joint.

This is a great site for a quick diagnostic and things to keep in mind before you go into the doctor for a hip injury.  It gives different injuries based on different symptoms as well as some common misdiagnoses of hip injuries.  This doesn’t replace going to the doctor, it just gives you some knowledge before you go in to discuss with your doctor.

Harkness made this great page on common dance injuries.  It gives you the cause and possible treatments of each one.  I especially enjoy the quotes at the beginning of each injury giving a “what you would be complaining of” scenario.

This site has great information on turnout at the hip, though, it doesn’t have any section on strengthening.

Dancehelp also has a page on hip health.  The drawn pictures of the injured hip are particularly interesting.

This is the most insightful webpage on turnout I’ve ever seen.  It covers anatomy but converts those terms into common speech so anyone can understand.  It also goes into problems to spot, strengthening, stretching and avoiding injury.  There are two parts and the link to the second is near the top of this page.

This is a blog question asking the “expert guy” about turnout.

This is a very informative article on turnout (TO) giving different reasons why turnout is harder for some and not others.

This gives some strengthening exercises and flexibility tests for the hip flexors.
