Data Entry (5 observations of 1 variable)

The yearly return on the Market over a period of five years is:

Procedure 1:  Using the List Editor

To enter the data (create a list) for 5 observations of 1 variable do the following:

Step 1: On a clear screen press 2nd and { keys and then enter the above observations starting with Year 1 and using a comma to separate each observation (comma key is fifth row second column) and end with the } key.  When done it should look like this {23.8,-7.2,6.6,20.5,30.6}

Step 2: Now press STO arrow (key above the ON key) to store the data,
and then enter XDATA to name the list.  To enter text REPEAT the green key ALPHA before entering each letter of the alphabet. That is, ALPHA, X (above the STO arrow key), ALPHA, D (above the X-1 key, fourth row first column), ALPHA, A (above MATH key, third row first column), ALPHA, T (above #4 key), ALPHA, A.

Thus, should have

on the screen.

Then press the ENTER key.

Step 3: To check if the data is entered correctly, go to 2nd, LIST (second row third column above the STAT key). You should be able to see under NAMES: 1: XDATA.

The next step is to perform statistical calculations, TI 83 Plus

Procedure 2:  Using the Stat Editor

To enter the data (create a list) for 5 observations of 1 variable do the following:

Step 1: On the Clear screen Press STAT 5 to select item 5: SetUpEditor from the STAT EDIT menu. SetUpEditor is pasted to the Screen. Then press ENTER . (This will remove lists from Stat Editor columns 1 through 20, and then stores lists L1 through L6 in columns 1 through 6.

You will see this on the screen:

Note: Removing lists from the stat list editor does not delete them from memory.

Step 2: Press STAT 1 to select select item 1: Edit from the STAT EDIT menu. The stat list editor is displayed (looks as shown below).

Step 3: Before entering the above market returns in L1 we have to clear column L1 to make sure that there are no other values. To clear column L1 click upward arrow to select L1 and then press Clear ,Enter buttons.

Step 4: select L1 by using the arrow keys as requried. Then press 2nd, INS to rename the column as XDATA. To enter text REPEAT the green key ALPHA before entering each letter of the alphabet. That is, ALPHA, X (above the STO arrow key), ALPHA, D (above the X-1 key, fourth row first column), ALPHA, A (above MATH key, third row first column), ALPHA, T (above #4 key), ALPHA, A.

Step 5:  To enter the markets returns into the column. press down arrow to select the first row (as shown in the figure above). Then enter 23.8 and click ENTER. Repeat this for all the five 5 values. Then it is automatically saved into the list Menu. To see the values values in XDATA again click 2nd LIST, then select XDATA using the arrow keys and hit ENTER. The follwing list is shown:
