final essay #5 due
Purpose: interpretive analysis of A Mystery of Heroism by Stephen Crane, pg 626-633; A Hunger Artist by Franz Kafka (handout); A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings by Gabriel Garcia Marquez (handout)
Note: you will need to read and reread the short story
Basic features:
- clearly define your thesis - your insight into overall plot or some other significant part of the story
- include title (within quotations) and full author name in introductory paragraph - last name after that (won't need title again either, use "story" or author's last name interchangeably)
- write in present tense, 3rd person POV (compose as though the story/plot is happening as you write)
- body paragraphs will use textual material from story to support your insight/viewpoint - use quotes to support your assertions - paraphrase larger blocks of text (note: (I don't want to see all quotes, but use enough to support your insight see pg. 440 #5)
- though most literary interpretation can be considered valid, you must have a convincing argument backed by solid textual material
- develop clear, concise reasons to back your thesis or insight and organize effectively - no jumping around, or unconnected ideas
- use a pleasing conclusion - a creative restatement of your interpretation or your overall assessment
- you can use research evidence to support your reasoning, if desired
- at least 4 full pages of concise writing; cite any outside source you use
- I am not requiring line numbers for direct quotes, but remember that is the convention
