The essay itself is double-spaced, but the heading is single-spaced because it contains

routine identifying information. It is there so I know who to give credit for the work, but it

doesn't need much space. Only two (2) single-spaced blank lines allowed between heading and

the title. The rest is to be double-spaced. Please note there are no double returns between

paragraphs. The extra spacing is not allowed, nor does it look professional, academically

or otherwise.

The margins are one-inch on all sides. To verify margin settings go to File -> Page Setup

to check. Obvious deviations from default margins will be brought to your attention.

You will notice a few spots here where I used bold font to add emphasis. However, I

discourage you from this practice. To add emphasis, either restate your position in a new way,

and back it up with researched facts. Italics or underlining is fine, but use sparingly!

Notice on subsequent pages I have tabbed out to the left margin and placed my last name,

followed immediately by a dash(-) and the page number. Then simply hit return, where you

should still be set up for double spacing, and continue your essay. Each page of your essay after

page one needs this format. You can use a header to add page numbers, but be careful,

sometimes they can cause headaches on revisions. The method above is fast and simple.

I encourage you to use dialogue in essays (especially in narrative essay one) as a good

learning device, and to see how it brings immediate action to a story. Dialogue is set off on

its own paragraph.

"Really?" she asked.

"Yes, that is the convention," was my quick reply.
