The pilot project began with a trip on April 3, 1998 to the University of Michigan for a demonstration of their ImageNow software. Doug Alrick and I accompanied three FA staff members, including the director. All were suitably impressed with the ease of use, functionality and clarity of online images, as well as the hospitality of our host.
On April 16, the same beta version as that used by U of M was installed on a NT server in the UCS machine room. After tweaking a few minor bugs, the image server/scanning station/client station was moved to the FA area, and starting the week of April 20 Doug and I, along with FA personnel, began a shakedown of the software in earnest. The configuration consisted of a 200mhz processor running Windows NT 4.0 and 4.2g storage; a ViewSonic 21 inch display with Matrox Millennium video driver; and a Canon DR-3020 scanner with Kofax Adrenaline software interface.
After the 30 day trial period, FA, in conjunction with involved UCS systems staff, recommended the purchase of ImageNow, and the requisite hardware, including scanner.
