Day 2

May 8 - Monday

Istanbul

Arrived in Istanbul and checked in to Hotel Armada. Began introduction to city with visit to the Kariye Museum (St. Savior in Chora) and a cruise on the Bosphorus. Ended day with fish dinner at a fresh fish restaurant on the shore of the Bosphorus.
Below is a photo of the Kariye Museum (The church of St. Savior in Chora). This church dates from the 14th century and houses a superb collection of late Byzantine mural mosaics and frescoes depicting the life of Jesus Christ. After the Turkish conquest, the building was converted into a mosque but the mosaics were protected under a thin layer of plaster and whitewash. They were restored by the Byzantine Institute of America during the 1940's and the building now serves as a museum.

The old city walls can be viewed easily from the Bosphorus. Only twice since built in th 5th century have hostile forces broken through the walls.

Stephanie and Julie are choosing to laugh rather than fall asleep at our fresh fish dinner.
