Wednesday, May 10 Istanbul to Ankara |
Left Armada Hotel in Istanbul, drove through the region that was affected by the earthquake of August 17,1999 to Sanfranbolu. There we saw old Ottoman houses and learned about family living arrangements and use of space, visited with local families in their houses and visited the old market district. |
With iron deposits, lush forests and fields growing the valuable saffron croci that gave the town its name, Safranbolu prospered quietly for hundreds of years. Today, with its well-preserved collection of Ottoman houses, the town has acquired emblematic status for architects, social historians, town planners and conservationists.
Below, the owner of an old Ottoman house in Safranbolu poses with group members: Marlene Breu, Melodye James, Rebecca Rochet, and Roberta Cianciolo.
