Third Coast Writing Project: As director of this National Writing Project site, I love being able to open doors for classroom teachers, to support and strengthen their work, and to help them carry out amazingly good ideas. During the past year, more than 900 teachers and students participated in TCWP programs.

Most recent publication:
Brinkley, E. H. & Weaver, C. "Phonics, Literalism, and Futuristic Fiction: Religious Fundamentalism and Education Policy." In L. Poyner and P. Wolfe (Eds). Marketing Fear in America's Public Schools: Mahwah, NJ: Lawrence Erlbaum Associates. (In press.) This chapter builds on previous work linked to school censorship in the English Language Arts.

National leadership role:
During the past five years I have served as chair or co-chair of the National Writing Project's Rural Sites Network, one of four NWP national networks. RSN provides retreats, summer institutes, conference programs, and minigrant funding for NWP teacher consultants who teach in small towns and rural areas.

Professional consultation:
Working under contract with the College Board, I have drafted its English Language Arts Framework, which is being created as a guide for the development of instructional materials, assessments, and professional development activities in English.
