Refugees

Refugee definition used by the Immigration and Naturalization Service, which is the agency which handles immigration to the United States:

 

A refugee is an alien outside the United States who is unable or unwilling to return to his or her country because of well-founded fear of persecution.Claims of persecution must be based on race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group or political opinion (INS 1996: p. 72).
