Gendering in Television Ads Assignment

 

We are starting a new topic, on gender and transgender. To start us off, we are going to spend Tuesday, November 4th watching commercials.

 

You can get a full lab credit for Tuesday quite simply:

 

  1. Watch tv this weekend and pay attention to commercials.
  2. Choose one commercial that you think would be a good candidate for an interesting discussion about gender ideas, gender roles, gender assumptions, or transgender.
  3. Tape the commercial onto a VHS tape (no DVD—the Anthropology is too poor and doesn’t own a DVD player) and
  4. Bring it to class.

 

We will watch as many commercials as we have time to discuss, and everyone who comes with taped commercial in hand will get a 1.2 for the day’s lab.
