Choose one “text”
to do a min-semiotic analysis of.
Choosing your “text”:
You may make your text. That is, collect data (watching gestural
codes in a bar for example). Alternatively, you may choose a scene in a film
(or a single frame of film), or a magazine image, etc.
Doing your analysis:
Choose one medium (or two media at most) for analysis—for example,
clothing as sign, gestural code, tactile code, facial
code, etc. (You should be able to identify whether the medium or media you
choose are natural, artifactual, or mechanical.)
Write up the analysis
in 1 page. If you collect your own data, attach a data write-up as
a second page. If you choose an image, attach a photocopy of it. If you choose
a film scene or frame, specify the film and scene. If I may not have seen
it, it might be good to attach a second sheet describing the scene or frame.
