Nairobi Middle Class Nairobi Middle Poor Iraqw House

PHOTOGRAPHS

We don't necessarily think about our pots and pans as being "material culture," and yet, from an anthropological perspective, they are. So, while Iraqw bowls and firestones, and Samburu calabashes may seem intriguing, the comfy chair in an urban home may seem like strange candidates to highlight on an East Africa web page. Yet these are indeed, examples of material culture, and an Iraqw or Samburu man's reaction to my photographing a "men's stool" as if it were something special has a lot in common with my friends' amusement in Nairobi as I took pictures of their living room.
