TANZANIA COUNTRY INFORMATION

Geographic Description
Tanzania is in East Africa. It includes the islands of Mafia, Pemba, and Zanzibar. Tanzania borders the Indian Ocean, and the countries of Uganda, Kenya, Mozambique, Malawi, Zambia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Burundi, and Rwanda. It covers 945,087 square kilometers and is roughly the size of Nevada.

Like Kenya, Tanzania has a wide diversity of ecological zones and wildlife. Physical features vary from the central plateau and highlands in north and south to plains along coast, and from lush tropical areas to vast grasslands subject to drought. Tanzania boasts Mount Kilimanjaro, the tallest mountain in Africa (19,340 feet) and is bordered by three of the largest lakes on the continent (Lake Tangaynika, Lake Nyasa, and Lake Victoria--the world's second-largest freshwater lake). Tanzania also has one of the highest concentrations of buffalo, crocodile, hippo, hunting dog, chimpanzee and elephant.
