Strategic Long-Range Technology Plan and Integrated Technology Curriculum July 01, 2008 – June 30, 2011

Section 9: Professional Development

Springport Public Schools believes professional development and training is critical to the successful implementation of the Integrated Technology Curriculum. Plans for technology training are aligned with the standards set for by the National Council for Staff Development, the Technology Standards for School Administrators (TSSA), the National Educational Technology Standards for teachers, and the National Educational Technology Standards for Students. Training is also based on the grade level content expectations set forth in the Michigan Educational Technology Standards (METS). All of which will be incorporated into the professional development opportunities available to all administrators, teachers and other staff members.

Professional Development

Training Sessions will focus on the use of hardware and software, as well as the integration of these tools into the curricular areas. Professional development will be offered to all employee groups – teachers, administrators and support personnel. Special efforts will be made to address the cross-curricular effectiveness of technology in the classroom. Workshops will continue to be offered that include heterogeneous staff members, media specialists, varied subject matter teachers and technology staff working together. Future efforts will focus on basic skills with technology tools, integrations of technology with the curriculum, and implementation of new technology tools.

Follow-up/ support activities for continued training related to educational technology

The Collins Writing Program Workshop and MEAP toolkit are follow-up activities to the staff development provided in the 2007 / 2008 school year. The training seminars are provided by the Jackson County Intermediate School District.

MEAP toolkit

Scheduled as needed by Jackson County districts (February-September)

Teachers will analyze their classroom, grade level, and district results from the MEAP test. They will learn how to teach students to “buy in” to data analysis and become better test takers. Also, teachers will discover where they need to focus for improvement, gain tools to be used daily in the classroom, and create a plan for implementing the changes needed for better scores in the future.

Collins Writing Program Workshop

Content area and ELA teachers will learn the tried and true ways of the Collins Writing Workshop to save time and effort in preparing and conducting writing lessons as well as processing student work. This workshop will demonstrate ways of using writing activities to increase students’:

• Understanding of course content

• Classroom involvement

• Motivation to learn

• Comprehensive strategies relative to the

MEAP/MME/ACT

Language arts teachers at the secondary level and elementary teachers responsible for teaching writing will be shown how to manage Six Traits, Barry Lane, and other approaches using the Collins Writing Program.

Plan of action for continued support of Ed. Technology- Staff Development activities

Follow-up activities have not been outlined for all staff development specified for the 2008 / 2009 school year. Most, if not all activities are considered to be new staff development. Springport Middle School is active in team development strategies. Time will be set aside for teams to use practices learned during staff development activities. This time will be spent developing lessons that integrate strategies learned and align with Michigan grade level expectations. Assessments will be administered and gathered to determine how successful initial training was and if further training will be needed. A survey from the Jackson County Intermediate School District will be used for the assessment of all staff development activities.
