Rounding Resources

One way that I teach rounding is to le the students relate the rounding up or staying the same to a neighbor. We have broken it down to steps. They are as follows:

  1. Find the place value you are rounding to and underline it.
  2. Look at the number behind it. We call this the neighbor. We decide if we have a bossy or friendly neighbor.
    • 4 and under are called friendly because they don’t make the number change

    • 5 or more are called bossy because they make the number change

  3. The bossy or friendly neighbor and all the friends or numbers behind it become zeros.
  4. All the numbers in front of the place value stay the same because they are protected by the rounded number.
