Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment

Toronto sports fans get a double dose of entertainment from this company. Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE) owns and operates two of that city's professional sports franchises, the Toronto Raptors basketball team and the storied Toronto Maple Leafs hockey team, as well as Toronto's Air Canada Centre where both teams play. In addition to the sports franchises, MLSE operates television channels dedicated to each team. Formed in 1998, the company is controlled by Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan, which owns 58% of MLSE. Other shareholders include CTVglobemedia (15%, formerly Bell Globemedia), construction magnate and chairman Larry Tanenbaum (13%) and Toronto-Dominion Bank unit TD Capital (14%).

Apple
Computers are still an important part of its mix, but these days music-related products are at the top of Apple's playlist. The company scored a runaway hit with its digital music players (iPod) and online music store (iTunes). Apple's desktop and laptop computers -- all of which feature its OS X operating system -- include its Mac mini, iMac, and MacBook for the consumer and education markets, and more powerful Power Mac and MacBook Pro for high-end consumers and professionals involved in design and publishing. Other products include servers (Xserve), wireless networking equipment (Airport), and publishing and multimedia software. The company's FileMaker subsidiary makes database software.
