Arnie Nelson was born several decades ago in Stillwater, Minnesota (where the local prison is being converted into a Radisson Hotel, to open in 1999), earned academic degrees at Hamline University and the University of Minnesota (a Ph. D. in American Studies). He joined the faculty of Western Michigan College of Education in 1954, and in addition to teaching freshman composition and American literature, participated in the development of a course called "English Language" which was required of all English majors and was in fact a course in Transformational Grammar. Upon retirement in 1981 from Western Michigan University, he and his wife Helen flew not south, but north, to Ludington, MI, where their many civic contributions have included the publication of a Swedish cookbook and the creation of a collection of videotapes of Scandanavian films at the local community college.
