Pore Water Peepers in tank of DI water before deployment:
Slits in coverplate at 1-2 cm intervals expose underlying chambers (covered by 0.2 micron membrane) to DI water in tank. The tank is bubbled under N2 gas to remove oxygen before inserting the peepers into the saltmarsh sediment. The DI water in the chambers will be allowed to equilibrate with the surounding sediment pore waters for approximately 4 weeks.

After removal, peeper is transported to field laboratory in portable N2-filled glvoebag to avoid reoxidation of reduced chemical species in pore waters:
