Tentative Schedule:

Here is the semester run-down. Again, do note that this is a 'tentative' schedule. Sometimes, things just change. Although I will try to stick to this schedule, just be flexible.

Please note: If a class is canceled (due to snow or other reasons) on a paper/assignment's due date, that paper will be collected at the next class.



WEEK ONE: Introductions

Tues, 9/4 -- Introductions & Syllabus

  • Syllabus, discussion, questions, etc.
  • Interviews/Personal Introductions.

Homework/Reading for Next Class:

  • Take a good look at this syllabus handed out in class. Come to the next class prepared to ask questions.
  • Go online and visit the class website. Check out the assignments; print off the assignments; visit some of the resources. You need to do this: I rely heavily on this site for discussion, research, etc. Know what's going on.
  • Make sure to have read your two primary texts.
  • Get to work on your FOCUS Assignment: this is due on Thursday, September 20 at the end of class.
  • Plan ahead: "Major Excitement": Thursday, September 20, 1-5 PM.
  • Plan ahead: you have to complete two hours of "Community Service Activity" in Kalamazoo, so be thinking about it now.
  • Plan ahead: You must complete a "Diversity Activity" - you must attend or participate in at least one diversity event or activity on campus, so be thinking about this as well.
  • Both of the just mentioned are to be done by Tuesday, October 30th.


Thursday, 9/6: Introductions & Syllabus (cont.)

  • Continue discussion of syllabus and go over assignments in more detail.
  • FOCUS Assignment explanation, etc: due date for PART ONE is Thursday, 9/20.
  • Select groups for group assignment, and decide on topics to be covered during the semester.
  • Some time for group members to get to know each other.

Homework/Reading for Next Class:

  • Coordinate with your groups and begin working on your group assignment for class.
  • Make sure to have read your two primary texts.
  • Visit Waldo Library on line. Next week: you learn how to use the library!
  • Don't forget to attend "Major Excitement": Thursday, September 20, 1-5 PM - two weeks from today!
  • Start looking for technical support for your final project: Thematic Webpage/Homepage.
  • Do not forget about the FOCUS Assignment: It's due in a couple of weeks.
  • Nicenet: It's every week!



WEEK TWO: Waldo Library Visit


Tues, 9/11 - Waldo Library Orientation

  • Visit Waldo Library .
  • Meet in the atrium at Waldo Library at the start of class.

Homework/Reading for Next Class:

  • Continue to think about what you have learned about Waldo Library, and be ready to put that to use next class.
  • Remember: We meet at Waldo Library again at the start of the next class, Thursday.
  • Your first assignment will be given to you at the library on Thursday.
  • Make sure to have Lakota read for next week.
  • "Major Excitement": Thursday, September 20, 1-5 PM - attendance is required!
  • FOCUS Assignment: It's due soon!

  • Testing your cultural awareness: 'MultiCultural Education' quiz.

  • Read & Respond: Howard Zinn's article on Native Americans.
  • Start 'mapping' stories/themes in The Lakota Way .
