Avoid gaining the freshman 15
College is full of many temptations. You’re on your own and have the freedom to eat whatever and however much you want. You can pile on the portions, have dinners consisting of French fries and ice cream, or order a tasty pizza late night. While most indulge in the freedom to eat whatever they like they are not increasing their amount of physical exercise.
In order to stay healthy and avoid gaining weight your first year you must balance your diet. Eat from every food group. Get daily vegetables, fruits, meats, grains, eggs, and dairy. It is also best to eat 5 small meals each day and avoid 3 big meals.
Keep your dorm stocked with healthy food so you don’t have to depend on the not always so low in calories cafeteria food. When you do eat at the cafeteria, stick to the salad bar and use light dressings. Stay away from pasta and fried foods.
In many college towns restaurants and carry-out places stay open late into the night and early morning. In order not the gain weight you must resist the temptation to order food late at night. Eating food then going to bed is a major cause of weight gain.
Another important thing to keep in mind is that one beer contains about 150 calories. You must either drink in moderation or adjust your diet and exercise to fit in the calories you gain every night that you drink.
Take advantage of your school’s gym or recreation center. Exercise will not only help you to keep off the pounds but it will also help build structure in your day, make you feel good, and the gym is a great place to meet new people. You could sign up for an aerobics of other fitness class or just do your own work out.
