Picking major can be very hard and it is very important that you weigh out all your options and make a decision that is right for you.
Having a major you enjoy will make college easier and in the end you will end up with a career you enjoy as well.
Visit a Career Counselor for Help in Choosing a Major
Take advantage of your college’s career center it is there to help you. You can take self-assessments to see what careers are compatible with your interests and skills. A career counselor can also recommend books and other tools that will help you to choose your course of study. If you are interested in a specific field or already have a couple majors in mind your career counselor can set you up with a faculty member or student leader who can answer your questions about a specific department. From them you can learn about the require curriculums and classes and get inside info about what professors are best at teaching the material or most fun. They also can tell you what the career possibilities are for each major. You should definitely utilize your school’s career center.
Try Out a Few Different Majors
If you can’t choose between a few majors you should take a few classes from each to see what you like. Your freshman year is all about finding yourself so don’t be afraid to try things you normally wouldn’t. You never know what you might find interesting. Taking a couple classes from different majors will give you a taste about what each one is about and hopefully help you in your decision.
Job Shadow
Job shadowing is another great way to help you in your major decision. Pick a couple careers you think you would enjoy and find someone in that field. Follow them at a day and see what their career is all about. You can’t know if you will like something until you try it.
