The multidisciplinary treatment team for eating disorders was begun in 1993 by a group of professionals from the Sindecuse Health Center ( C. Zimmer, M.A. and T. Baxter, M.D.) and the University Counseling and Testing Center (E. Phillips, Ph.D.). The purpose of the team is to provide a collaborative response to a problem area that is difficult to treat. Anorexia and bulimia involve the psychological and physiological health of the individual who is affected. The treatment team approach is well-supported in the eating disorder literature. Team meetings allow the professionals from Sindecuse and the University Counseling and Testing Center to engage in collaborative case reviews and to develop a coordinated approach to individualized treatment.
All Western Michigan University students who want to resolve issues regarding bulimic or anorexic behaviors are eligible to have the team consult regarding their treatment. To participate, students must sign two forms: one for joint consultation and one for informed consent. These forms are available through physicians or physicians assistants at Sindecuse and through psychologists and counselors at the University Counseling and Testing Center. Students must also agree to a physical exam, a nutritional consultation, and ongoing therapy. These three elements of treatment may be sought through Sindecuse and the University Counseling and Testing Center or through professionals outside of the University.
Please note that all students can receive medical and psychological treatment for eating disorders at Sindecuse and at the University Counseling and Testing Center without participation in the Eating Disorder Treatment Team Program.
