MDVL 6000
Spring 2010

"By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat and wept when we remembered Sion"

This seminar focuses on the Psalms and the imagery associated with them in medieval manuscript contexts. Students will be introduced to the Latin versions of the Psalms, the commentary they engendered, their role in the medieval liturgy and in private devotion, the various manuscript contexts for their transmission, and the approaches taken by medieval illuminators toward visualizing their often enigmatic imagery.

Class meetings: Mondays and Wednesdays, 3:30-4:45 p.m.

Prerequisites: None, but an elementary knowledge of Latin is assumed.
