Lecture:
Classes meet in 1110 Rood Hall every day from 9:00 to 9:50.
Course:
This course is a continuation of General Physics I, and will thus emphasize conceptual understanding of and problem-solving skills in the following subjects: Electricity and Magnetism, Light and Optics, and Modern Physics (Atomic, Nuclear and Elementary Particle Physics).
Text (required):
College Physics (5$^{th}$ edition), by Serway and Faughn (1999), Saunders College Publishing. We will cover Chapters 15-30 during the semester (approximately one chapter per week).
Text (recommended):
Student Solutions Manual and Study Guide, by Gordon and Serway.
Calculator:
A pocket calculator will be needed and should be brought to all exams and lectures.
Prerequisite:
Physics 113 (General Physics I).
  1. It is Department policy that a grade of "C" or better in a prerequisite course is required before enrollment is permitted in the next-sequence course. A student who does not meet this requirement must drop this course as soon as possible and no later than the no-refund deadline.
  2. It is University policy that the number of times a course can be taken is limited to three (including withdrawals). A student whose current enrollment is in violation of this policy must drop this course as soon as possible and no later than the deadline for no refund of tuition.

Corequisite:
Physics 116 (General Physics II Lab). Labs begin on Monday, 1/8.

Homework:
About 6 Problems will be due every Monday, and these (or any other) problems will then be solved in class, by request. One of these 6 problems will appear on the next day's quiz or exam. You will receive a homework grade of up to 100 points (10%) toward your final grade.
First assignment, due Monday, January 8$^{th}$: Ch. 15, #12, 19, 26, 28, and 47.
Exams:
There will be four regular exams during the semester; each counts 100 points, for a total of 400 points (40%), toward your final grade. You will be tested on all material covered since the previous exam. No make up exams will be given. If you miss an exam, you will receive a zero. A major medical alibi or a death in the immediate family are the only exceptions to this policy.

Quizzes:
There will be nine quizzes that each count 25 points, for a total of 225 points (22.5%), toward your final grade. You will be quizzed on all material covered since the previous quiz or exam. No make up quizzes will be given.

Final Exam:
The comprehensive (Chapters 15-30) two-hour final exam will take place on Monday, April 16$^{th}$, from 10:15-12:15, in 1110 Rood Hall. It will count 275 points (27.5%) toward your final grade. The best way to prepare for exams and quizzes is to practice by solving problems individually or in groups.

Point Allocation:
Homework at 100 points = 100
4 Exams at 100 points = 400
9 Quizzes at 25 points = 225
Final Exam at 275 points = 275
