Classes:
Meet in 2211 Rood from 5:30-6:45 on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Prerequisite:
PHY460 (Quantum Mechanics using Griffiths), or an equivalent upper-level undergraduate course, is required; PHY622 (Quantum Mechanics using Merzbacher) is strongly recommended.
Text (Required):
Physics of Atoms and Molecules, by B. H. Bransden and C. J. Joachain (1983), Wiley. This book is out of print, but I have 4 used copies that you can purchase from Lori in the Physics Department Office for $60 each. The Copy Desk in the Bernard Center is also making copies of this that can be purchased at the bookstore instead.
Homework:
Selected problems from the end of each chapter will be due approximately every week, and will count 50% toward your final grade.
First assignment, due Thursday, 9/6: 1.2, 1.5, 1.11, 1.13, 1.16, 1.19
Second assignment, due Thursday, 9/13: 2.7, 2.8, 2.10, 2.12, 2.19, 2.21
Computer Assignments:
There will be an occasional computer assignment, counting 20% toward your final grade. These must be completed on a Unix/Linux system, so either a WMU Unix account, or an account on one of my Linux machines, is required.
Exams:
There will be a two-hour midterm from 5:30 to 7:30 on Thursday, November 15$^{th}$, and a two-hour final exam on Tuesday, December 4$^{th}$, from 5:00-7:00 (note earlier time), in 2211 Rood. Each will count 15% toward your final grade.

Grading Scale

A   85-100
B   70-84
C   55-69
D   40-54
E   0-39
