Office Hours tentatively scheduled for

            Mondays 1 - 2 pm,      Thursdays  9 - 10 am,    and by appointment

Course Goals

To explore the teaching and learning of discrete mathematics recommended for inclusion in the secondary school curriculum.

Course Materials

Discrete Mathematics Across the Curriculum K-12 , the 1991 Yearbook of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and additional readings to be distributed during the semester.  A $5.00 fee payable to the Department of Mathematics and Statistics is required to support the cost of duplicating these additional materials.

Course Requirements

Students are expected to attend each class session, participate in and complete all activities, and share in discussions of assigned activities and readings.   The following are tentative plans for the weighting of course requirements:

                        15-25%           Assignments     (primarily in-class)

                        25-35%           Group Project    (all written portions due on Monday July 21)

                        20-30%           Exam 1              (July 18th or July 21)

                        25-30%           Exam 2              (August 4 or 5)

Course Grades

If all the course requirements have been met, course grades will be assigned according to the following scale:

            A         93% - 100%                CB       77% - 81%                  D         60% - 65%

            BA                  88% - 92%                  C         71% - 76%                  E          Below 60%

            B         82% - 87%                  DC      66% - 70%

Policy on Incompletes

Three conditions must be met for an incomplete:   (1) you must have completed most of the coursework;

(2)  your current grade is C or better and  (3)  circumstances beyond your control prevent the completion of the coursework on time.  All incomplete grades must be approved by the Chair of the Mathematics Department.
