Course Goals
To explore the teaching
and learning of discrete mathematics recommended for inclusion in the secondary
school curriculum.
Course Materials
Discrete Mathematics
Across the Curriculum K-12 , the 1991 Yearbook of the National Council of Teachers of
Mathematics, and additional readings to be distributed during the
semester. A $5.00 fee payable to
the Department of Mathematics and Statistics is required to support the cost of
duplicating these additional materials.
Course Requirements
Students are expected to
attend each class session, participate in and complete all activities, and
share in discussions of assigned activities and readings. The following are tentative plans
for the weighting of course requirements:
15-25% Assignments (primarily in-class)
25-35% Group
Project (all written portions due on Monday July 21)
20-30%
Exam
1 (July 18th or July 21)
25-30% Exam
2 (August 4 or 5)
Course Grades
If all the course
requirements have been met, course grades will be assigned according to the
following scale:
A 93%
- 100% CB 77% - 81% D 60%
- 65%
BA 88%
- 92% C 71%
- 76% E Below
60%
B 82%
- 87% DC 66% - 70%
Policy on Incompletes
Three conditions must be met for an
incomplete: (1) you must
have completed most of the coursework;
(2)
your current grade is C or better and (3) circumstances
beyond your control prevent the completion of the coursework on time. All incomplete grades must be approved
by the Chair of the Mathematics Department.
