Teach woodworking and metalworking classes to students in grades five through eight. Maintain all tools and equipment including bandsaws, table saw, planer, joiner, engine lathes, wood lathes, etc. in the schools workshop. Order tools, equipment, materials, supplies and major maintenance work.
Shipwright/laborer-2006
Participated in fitting out, refastening, caulking and wiring a 52’ fishing trawler originally built in 1912.
Boatwright- 2006
Crafted and fit a new stem timber and knee for a 47’ custom wooden power cruiser.
Schooner Wild Goose Saint Joseph, MI
Boatwright- 2005
Directed and performed most of the labor for a major repair and bi-annual maintenance for the owner. Replaced seven frames (laminated in place), twelve planks, and lots of ceiling boards. Wild Goose is a 47’ Eastward Schooner designed by Eldredge-McGinnis and built in 1929 by the Glouchster Yacht Yard in Glouchster Mass. She is 5/4 White Cedar on 6/4 White Oak frames that were originally fastened with galvanized nails.
Schooner Appledore IV, Bay City, MI
Deckhand/Educator/Unlicensed Mate 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001 Sailing Seasons
Planned and executed introductory sailing/team building courses for various groups from Boys and Girls Club groups to corporate executives. Maintained mechanical, electrical and water systems in addition to the rig and logged tasks performed by the crew. Performed daily system checks, delegated crew assignments and tasks necessary for the operation of the vessel. Greeted and assisted passengers boarding the vessel. Stood wheel and deck watches, including navigation in restricted visibility, while underway at sea. Appledore IV is an 85’ steel-hulled gaff topsail schooner that displaces 72 tons and flies up to seven sails for a total of 3,500 square feet of sail. She was designed by Herb Smith and built by Trowdry Yachts. She has a single inline 6 cylinder Ford diesel, two heads, hot, cold, potable, raw, grey and black water systems. She also has 110v AC and 12v DC electrical systems.

Taught laboratory sections of machine woodworking and metal machining classes. Planned and facilitated student use of workshop facilities.
Cabin Counselor, Boating Instructor Midland Community Center Boys Camp 1997-2001 Supervised a cabin of boys as well as running the boating activities (canoeing, paddle boating, sailing and rowing) for a week-long camp.
