"Skim, Scan, and Copy" Materials: Chapter 5
Chapter five takes a look at multicultural education. A couple of very important ideas to make clear are John Ogbu's notion of 'dominated cultures' and Sonia Nieto's argument that multicultural education is about social empowerment.
As a whole, Spring raises important questions about culture. Should there be a common culture? Should students have the right to receive instruction in their own culture? Also, what of subcultures, such as gay and lesbian students? How should schools handle their unique voices?
Your job is to explore what is really going on when it comes to multicultural education and critical issues related to the issue.
Skim, scan and copy material from the following sources:
- Consider multicultural education, specifically 'how to' and 'how not to' teach about dominated and immigrant cultures.
- Skim, scan and copy material on the following educators: John Ogbu , James Banks, Sonia Nieto , Lisa Delpit , Jawanza Kunjufu ; review Enid Lee .
- C consider the idea of critical multicultural education , and critical pedagogical theorists such as Peter McLaren, Henry Giroux .
- Find examples of ways that teachers can apply multicultural education in their classrooms: even math and phys. ed and science .
- Explore reasons why some cultures, such as African Americans , might be better served in attending schools that promote and celebrate their cultural identities.
- Consider curriculum commonly taught in today's schools. What do we mean by Eurocentrism ?
- Consider the issue of teaching about gays/lesbian issues in schools. Visit the website "Understanding Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Rights as Human Rights." What is your response to the idea of addressing the issue?
