Book Discussion Group
Dr. Barbara J. Hemphill will present a book discussion group April 5th and 7th at 6:30 to 8:00. It is a Lenten book that describes and offers study of JesusŐ entry into Jerusalem and his march to the cross. The first session will include chapters covering JesusŐ entry into Jerusalem and days Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Session two will cover days Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Easter Sunday.
Book: The Last Week: A Day-by-Day Account of JesusŐ Final Week in Jerusalem. Authors Marcus Borg & John Dominic Crossan. Using the gospel of Mark as a guide the authors give an account of JesusŐ final week of life. It is a day-by-day account of JesusŐ march to Calvary. They begin with Palm Sunday and ending with Easter Sunday. It is a book of 216 pages and eight chapters. The authors explain two separate entries into Jerusalem, beginning with JesusŐ entry and the entry of the Roman governor Pontius Pilate.
Marcus Borg is Hundere Distinguished Professor of Religion and Culture at Oregon State University and is the author of many books. Among them are The Heart of Christianity, and The God We Never Knew.
John Dominic Crossan is a religious historian and author of many books including The Historical Jesus, and The Birth of Christianity. He has taught at a Catholic university in Chicago.
Presenter: The discussion is lead by Dr. Barbara J. Hemphill. She has a Doctor of Ministry degree from the Ecumenical Theological Seminary in Detroit. She is Assistant Professor Emeritus at Western Michigan University where she taught spirituality to occupational therapy students and a computer course on spirituality on-line. Dr. Hemphill has also taught a spirituality course at the senior center in Portage, Michigan and at Fountain Place, a retirement community. She has also written book reviews on spirituality for the Portage Library and led two 6-week courses on C.S. Lewis.
