Microsoft Research performs both academic and product-focused research in areas such as data management, network security, and hardware development. Headquartered in Redmond, Microsoft Research also operates two labs in California, one in Massachusetts, and international locations in China, India, and the UK. Microsoft founded its research unit in 1991.

In addition to a full line of desktop and notebook PCs, Dell offers network servers, data storage systems, printers, Ethernet switches, and peripherals such as displays and projectors. It also markets third-party software and hardware. Dell's growing services unit provides infrastructure consulting, systems integration, asset recovery, financing, support, and training.
